Horses At Play

We were on our way to San Luis and saw these horses playing in a pond left from our recent rain. They splashed each other, rolled onto their back and pawed the bottom.

They chased each other and threw around some plants that were in the bottom of the pond.  I guess I'd say, "they were just horsing around!"

It was quite a display and we watched them having fun until they had had enough.

Then, as if on cue they gathered themselves up, shook themselves off and regain their horse composure!

One Tough Manicure

It is time to trim Johnny's hooves again. They need attention every 6 to 8 weeks. I have learned to do it my self just because it is so much easier than scheduling and waiting for a farrier to show up.

The bad news is it is hard on the back! In the summer I let Johnny stand in the running water for a while. This softens up his hooves and makes the job much easier. During the winter if we have had any rain this isn't necessary as the foot get moisture from the ground.

The tools I use are the hoof pick, a hoof knife, a nipper and a rasp.

Once back in the barn Johnny immediately smells the fresh hay that Hubs went to get while I was finishing up the trim. He knows it is just on the other side and he wants some!

And he was so right. Posted by Picasa

"Does This Make Me Look Girly?"

It was big time grooming day for Johnny the miniature horse. First I trimmed his hooves and got them all four in good shape. He is a pretty good boy, especially if alfalfa hay is involved. I know, I know, I shouldn't reward bad behaviour, but sometimes you just have to do what you have to do to get the job done! I cut his bridle path and combed out his mane and tail. His tail was so long it was dragging on the ground and was full of grass so I decided to try the braid. I do trim it but I just was not quite ready to cut it. He was very patient but I swear I hear him say, "Does this make me look girly?" Posted by Picasa
